Delta CO 7th Marines Good Day Sam, I served with Ernie in 'D' Co. 1/8 1965 as his fire team leader for a very short while, and then along with many E-3's and below in the company were issued orders to Nam. Before I join Delta 1/8 Ernie had earned himself the nick name of "BEAR". The story goes that while on a night training exercise in the woods of Camp Swampy he and his fire team members were setting up or had set up for an ambush when they heard movement to their rear. Ernie jumped up and started yelling it's a bear it's a bear, so came the nick name "BEAR", and from what I was told there was no bear seen and what cause the noise remains unknown. Ernie and I along with several other 1/8 Marines joined 1/7, I went to "C" Company and of course Ernie went to Delta. The day Ernie was KIA I was at Bn. rear and heard that he was at Delta rear just returning from R&R. I ran down to Delta admin office with the idea of having a couple of bears with the BEAR, but the clerks said he had already got on duce and half and was headed out to Delta forward. I always regretted in not getting to the office sooner. I have visited the wall several times and always pay my respects to him. Regards Joe Windsor CWO4 USMC (Ret.)
