Last Known Activity Tom Newstead was on his second tour after briefly returning to Michigan. He served with Company D, 1st Bn, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, FMF and was killed on the last day of a search and destroy operation. He was awarded a Purple Heart with Gold Star. He is buried in Grant Township Cemetery, Grand Traverse County, Michigan, and a Marine Corps Flag is flown over his grave.
