I served as a Marine for 3 years including one rotation in Vietnam. I had just been discharged in May of 1969 and came to live with my grandpartents in Blanchardville Wisconsin. I knew Dan as I had often spent time in Blanchardville prior to my enlistment. When I moved there my Grandparent's home was one door down from the Gallagher's home and Dan and I saw each other infrequently. When I learned he had joined the Marines I gave him the usual "you'll be sorreeee" but he was enthuastic and I told him since he had a couple years of collage he would get a good MOS and his response was that he wanted to be in the infantry. Off he went and his mother told me he was defiant to the protesters in Milwaukee who tried to disuade them. Dan's mother worked at the library and I kept up with his progress including his graduation from boot camp and his deployment to Vietnam.
I was home from school in September 1970, standing looking out the picture window of my grandparents house when an olive drab Marine staff car cruised slowly up our street. This could only mean one thing. I had put Vietnam out of mind for a year and now it came crashing back to me. (to be continued)
