CAPTAIN WILLIAM HENRY NEUSS was assigned to C/1/3 as the "XO" when he was KIA on October 11th, 1967 on Operation MEDINA. 1stLT Neuss(at the time, in the process of being Promoted to Captain), was in the CP Group when a portion of the Company Lines were OVER-RAN by the NVA. The NVA moved a Machinegun to the top of the Hill, and fired numerous times alternately at the Mortars Guys and the Company CP Group. 1stLT Neuss was Leading at the CP Group after the Captain was WIA, when he was KIA. Per Kevin Brooks(2ndLT Arty FO at the time), 1stLT Neuss was TALL(actually 6'8"), was Promoted to Captain-Posthumously, and was Awarded the SILVER STAR-Posthumously for his Actions that morning. Ron Lawrence(former C/1/3 Marine) said 1stLT Neuss had come in country(Vietnam) in May 1967 with him, was the Company "XO", and was Tall. C/1/3 sustained a total of 7-KIA's and 18-WIA's that morning WE were Over-Ran. It was a TUFF day, and one None of US that were there will ever Forget! Lt Neuss attacked a 30 caliber machine gun position with his pistol to protect his men.
