Guitars for Grunts - The Zakk Wylde Guitar on TWS

Who is Zakk Wylde? He's the current guitarist for Ozzy Ozborne, taking up for the likes of Randy Rhodes and other legendary players that have backed Ozzy over the past few decades, and he fronts for his own band, "Black Label Society".

Why should you care? Because he's big-time in the rock world and he's also a Patriot! TWS Member Cpl Paul Hickman is running the Guitars For Grunts campaign - and doing an outstanding job! - and he recently contacted Zakk to inquire if he'd be willing to support the effort. He went one better and donated a signed Epiphone with his signature bulls-eye paint job, in cammo!

That's what it's all about, Marines supporting Marines - and it's motivating to see a member of the entertainment elite get involved.

TWS Offers a crisp Hand Salute to Cpl Hickman for his enduring efforts to get guitars in the hands of our deployed Bretheren, and to all those who are supporting the effort. Please take a moment to visit the the Guitars-for-Grunts website to learn more about the project and lend a hand if you can. Also, next time you're shopping for some rockin' tunes, consider throwing your business over to Zakk Wylde and one of his projects, he's proven that he backs the troops!

The donated guitar now has deployment orders to Iraq, as noted on this Forum Thread.

TWS Book of the this month is "HAMMER FROM ABOVE: MARINE AIR COMBAT OVER IRAQ. This is the real thing, a solid and readable account of Marine air support in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Captures the emotions, actions, and feel of the battlefield."

HAMMER FROM ABOVE: MARINE AIR COMBAT OVER IRAQ. by Jay Stout. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Marine Corps? ground campaign up the Tigris and Euphrates was notable for speed and aggressiveness unparalleled in military history. Little has been written, however, of the air support that guaranteed the drive?s success. Paving the way for the rush to Baghdad was ?the hammer from above??in the form of attack helicopters, jet fighters, transport, and other support aircraft. Now a former Marine fighter pilot shares the gripping never-before-told stories of the Marines who helped bring to an end the regime of Saddam Hussein.

416 pages. Photographs. ?The 2003 ground war in Iraq has been thoroughly reported by embedded correspondents and those who fought it. Hammer from Above now brings an entirely new perspective to the conflict. Jay Stout unflinchingly portrays the battle through the lens of the Marines who fought in the skies above Iraq. He has skillfully woven the first-person stories of these men and women into a compelling tale of bravery and chance in the crucible of combat that will become an enduring part of the history of the Iraq War.? ?Jon Hoffman, author of Chesty: The Story of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller, USMC

TWS Challenge Coins

You asked for them and they're on the way.

As you may be aware, we posted several versions of coin designs on the Forums and these were decided on as the design that best captures the images and identity of TWS. The graphic above is not an actual photo, it's a design copy of the colors and layout that will be used. The coin is solid metal, 1 5/8" with an epoxy covering over the image.

The first run of 300 coins was ordered last week and will be delivered in the next few weeks, so you can order yours now and they'll ship to you as soon as they arrive. They will also be available at the Parris Island Get Together next month.

To keep it simple, these coins are being offered for $10 each - which includes shipping. If you order more than one coin take $1 off for each of them since shipping costs are less by shipping them together. So, for example, 1 coin would be $10, 2 coins would be $19, 3 coins would be $28, etc - with shipping included.

Just send Cash, check or Money Order, addressed/payable to W.T.Prater, P.O. Box 50, Bryantsville, KY 40410. Payment can also be made via PayPal to wtprater@togetherweserved.com, please be sure to include your mailing address with the payment.

Medal of Honor - February/March Recipients

In recognizing the finest of Amerian Heroes, those who have received the Medal of Honor, it's only fitting that this month we recognize Jacklyn Harold Lucas who received the Medal for actions on Iwo Jima in February, 1945.

Jack Lucas is the TWS Island Storm 2008 Get Together Guest of Honor.

Jack Lucas

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division. Place and date: Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 20 February 1945. Entered service at: Norfolk, Va. Born: 14 February 1928, Plymouth, N.C.

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 20 February 1945. While creeping through a treacherous, twisting ravine which ran in close proximity to a fluid and uncertain frontline on D-plus-1 day, Pfc. Lucas and 3 other men were suddenly ambushed by a hostile patrol which savagely attacked with rifle fire and grenades. Quick to act when the lives of the small group were endangered by 2 grenades which landed directly in front of them, Pfc. Lucas unhesitatingly hurled himself over his comrades upon 1 grenade and pulled the other under him, absorbing the whole blasting forces of the explosions in his own body in order to shield his companions from the concussion and murderous flying fragments. By his inspiring action and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice, he not only protected his comrades from certain injury or possible death but also enabled them to rout the Japanese patrol and continue the advance. His exceptionally courageous initiative and loyalty reflect the highest credit upon Pfc. Lucas and the U.S. Naval Service.

NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR DAY

The United States Congress has designated March 25th of each year as NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR DAY, a day dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients. (Public Law 101-564) Conceived in the State of Washington, this holiday should be one of our most revered. Unfortunately all too many Americans are not even aware of its existence.

WHY MARCH 25th?
The date of March 25th was chosen to highlight this special day because it was on March 25 (1863) that the first Medals of Honor were presented...to six members of Andrews' Raiders. If you haven't read the story you can follow the hyperlink below titled THE FIRST PRESENTATION to read about that historic day. www.homeofheroes.com

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?
National Medal of Honor day is celebrated in some communities, however for the most part the occasion comes and goes with little notice. As a patriotic American there are a few things YOU can do to commemorate this day:

FLY YOUR FLAG with pride and patriotism on this day.

REMEMBER OUR HEROES. As a gesture of your appreciation, why not take just a few moments in the week prior to National Medal of Honor Day to mail a 'Thank You' card to one of our living Medal of Honor recipients. You can find a list of the living as well as information on writing to them among the pages of this site. www.homeofheroes.com

INFORM YOUR LOCAL MEDIA. Most newspapers aren't even aware that this special day exists. Why not tip your local media to the occasion. Before you do, check out our database for Medal of Honor recipients from your city and state as well as any who might be buried in your city. This information can give your media a 'local angle' that can increase the probability that they will consider doing a story to remind Americans of our heroes.

Consider doing something in your local schools, or even on a civic level, if there is a Medal of Honor recipient living near your location. Visit our site on SCHOOL IDEAS for more information on school assemblies.

If there is a Medal of Honor recipient buried in your home town, get a school class, scout troop, or other youth organization to 'adopt a grave site'. You can read in our SCHOOL IDEAS pages how one school in Pueblo has used just such a program as a part of their Social Studies program.

Movies for Marines

Vantage Point

Summary from the Studio: Thomas Barnes and Kent Taylor are two Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Ashton at a landmark summit on the global war on terror. When President Ashton is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos ensues and disparate lives collide in the hunt for the assassin. As they and others reveal their stories, the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place - and it will become apparent that shocking motivations lurk just beneath the surface.
Rated: [ PG-13 ]
Length: 90 minutes

My Review: Some love it, some hate it, but in my opinion this is a very good movie. It's told in a way that you've likely never experienced before, at least I hand't, but it made for a different movie experience that was very enjoyable. The movie opens with the event itself, an assasination attempt on the President, complete with Time Hacks as the event unfolds. After you see the event unfold, the clock rewinds and you see the event again, from a different perspective of someone else involved in the story. This happens quite a few times but by the end you know the whole story and how each character is involved. It features a first-rate cast and outstanding special effects. Those of us who've had security training (most all Mariens) will find lots of flaws in the plot, but hey, it's a movie, and it makes for a really good night out.

TWS Fallen Marine Project

TWS is a place to honor the service history of all Marines who served including those who fell in combat. So that they will not be forgotten, we have created a special facility where any TWS Member can post a Remembrance Profile for a Fallen Marine they knew or would like to honor, and this can be accessed via the "Remember a Marine" link on the LH Home page.

We have also developed an important feature which will enable TWS Members to adopt the Profile of a Fallen Marine already posted on the site. TWS has already researched and compiled comprehensive information on all 14,387 Marines who fell during the Vietnam War, 1965-1975, and these are now installed as Fallen Profiles accessible via the LH Home Page link. As no one is assigned to maintain these Profiles, we invite TWS Members to adopt one or more Fallen Profiles as custodian and researching and adding any additional information when available. 4,700 Vietnam Fallen Profiles have already been adopted by TWS Members and there are just over 9,600 remaining.

To adopt the Profile of a Fallen Marine from the Vietnam War, please click on the Adopt a Fallen Marine Profile link on the left hand Home Page after you log in or click here

Skinny Dipping
An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice, picnic tables, horseshoe courts, a volleyball court, and some apple and peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond and look it over, as he hadn't been there for a while. He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.

One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked."

Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

Old men can still think fast

Keep your contact info current

There are two ways in which Marines you served with can contact you via the TWS website: the first is via your "public" e-mail address displayed in your Personal Details on your Profile Page; and the other is by leaving a message in your Message Center Inbox. The latter triggers an advisory e-mail, sent to your "private" e-mail address to inform you that you have received a message and who it's from. Your "private" e-mail address, which is the one that TWS uses, is contained in your Account Details at the top of your Profile Page which you can modify at any time. TWS Members' "private" and "public" e-mail addresses are usually the same. So, please regularly log-in and update any changes to your e-mail addresses both in the Account Detail and Personal Detail sections of your Profile.

Marines.TWS Forums and Chat Boards - Sound Off!

What was your best duty station or assignment and why? What is the recipe for that good chow you know how to make out of an MRE? Where's the coldest beer on on WestPac? Do you have any tips about keeping healthy, or things to watch out for if you have a disease? These are just a few of the topics that are covered by the many Forums on Marines.TWS. These forums provide you, the members, a variety of places to discuss with other members the many topics we have in common.

Those members still on active duty would probably like to know about good assignments when they make out their "dream sheets" or talk to their Monitors. Those who have worked as Monitors or served on a board might want to provide a few tips for members in preparing to talk about their next assignment.

If you have a disease like diabetes, what tips can you give others about the disease and things to watch out for with diabetes? Encourage a fellow Marine to keep on top of a health problem so he stays with us for a long time.

These are but a couple of topics that are available for you to offer advice, warn others about, discuss with other Marines, etc, or just vent your frustrations about. So pull up a foot-locker and start shooting the breeze, the forums are for you.

Notes from the TWS Head-Shed

The Air Force Rumor Mill

AN OPEN LETTER TO AIR FORCE PUBLIC AFFAIRS:

Speaking as a Professional Military Retiree, I stand in amazement that no one in the Air Force bothered to raise the proverbial "red flag" and say, "Hey, shouldn't we look into this properly and confirm the information with the source?" Apparently not.

In recent weeks our sister website, AirForce.TogetherWeServed.com (AFTWS), which launched just before Christmas 2007 and had scampered-out of the gate, reaching 50,000 Members in just 4 weeks, has endured the consequences of one person's dissemination of mis-information and the Air Force's apparent willingness to embrace that mis-information, without question - and to forward it as if it were fact.

A PowerPoint OPSEC "training aid" was created by a field grade officer in a Special Operations Unit at Hurlburt Field, and e-mailed to OPSEC coordinators and PAO offices, throughout the Air Force, on January 30th. The problem with this document was that it was not properly researched, contained completely erroneous and misleading information, and entirely missed the point of what TWS is really all about. Since that time, the same brief has become a chain email that is now making it's way through all services.

Focused on AirForce.Togetherweserved.com, with screenshots and bullet point statements, this PowerPoint proceeded to state that AFTWS is German-owned and operates out of Nova Scotia - this is surprising as Togetherweserved.com is actually a California corporation, it's official address is in Chatsworth; and all TWS servers are located in Downtown Los Angeles as clearly stated in the About Us section on our Home Page!

The fact that all TWS websites are run entirely by former US Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen to the highest professional standards expected by its military personnel Members was mentioned nowhere in the brief. The PowerPoint appeared to convey the impression that TWS is run by faceless foreign nationals, and not Maj. Wes Prater (USMC Retired), Sgt.Maj. Joe Armstrong (USMC Retired), SCPO Anthony Costello (USN Retired), and SMSgt. Jim Franklin (USAF Retired), who head TWS's "sharp end."

It then proceeded to highlight that AFTWS is not endorsed by the DOD as if this was some kind of impediment. What appears to be misunderstood is that TWS websites are private, not government-created and therefore not funded with taxpayer dollars, and all non-government websites which have a military focus or theme are required, by law, to display the disclaimer that they are private entities not affiliated or endorsed by the services. TWS is following the law and it's being described as a cause for concern, when in fact, even the U.S. Naval Institute website falls into this category.

The PowerPoint expounds further on other misgivings and suppositions, geared towards stirring discomfort and possibly even paranoia, but made no mention of the fact that TWS has operated successfully for over four years with its Marines and Navy sites, without one report of any OPSEC incident in that entire time concerning any of its 500,000 Members. Because of their military training, TWS Members do use the same common sense regarding posting operationally-sensitive information on their profile as they would in any other environment, particularly those deployed as boots on the ground in combat zones. Members appreciate the fact that TWS not only has effective information-protection mechanisms - member contact information is automatically hidden by default and members can privacy-protect any sensitive information, including photographs, by way of a simple check box - but TWS Members are also fellow GIs, and are diligent when it comes to "watching the backs" of their Shipmates, Brothers and Wingmen.

What's especially ironic about some of the claims made in this PowerPoint is that the information displayed on TWS Member profile pages is little different to what's prominently displayed in the biography pages of hundreds of senior commanding officers on the USAF's official website which are fully open to the general public. This General Officer Bio on the af.mil page is an example in that it displays the same information that would normally be listed on a TWS Member profile.

TWS simply provides additional means for Members to search for others they may have served with, along with dedicated forums and messaging facilities to enable Members to enjoy the camaraderie of other service personnel. In other words, TWS is a communications company that represents no threat to OpSec beyond that presented by any other means of communication.

Had the officer made the slightest effort to contact TWS with any concerns and submitted helpful suggestions to address additional OPSEC considerations, important to him, which we could easily accommodate within our software, this unfortunate incident could have been entirely avoided and Airforce.Togetherweserved.com would continue to flourish in exactly the same secure and enjoyable manner as our own Navy.Togetherweserved.com.

A Navy TWS Member summarized the TWS spirit very succinctly in the following taken from one of our recent Forums:

"So why does NTWS perform? As I said, two reasons:

1. The site is safe. I have been a member for just over a year now (got my star on my ribbon last week!) and have not received one spam, one virus, one offer to help a Mongolian overlord reclaim his throne in exchange for $5000 of my hard earned dollars. And those who attempt to infiltrate this safe haven are quickly squashed like the insects they are. The members realize what a good thing we got here, and when something doesn't seem right, plenty of members report them. We police ourselves, and dammit, I like that.

2. We all have more than one common bond. Yes, being Navy is obvious, but it goes beyond that. I mean, Maxie is what, 172 years old? And he is one of the more popular people on this site, young and old and in between. I find things in common with the Master Chief who retired 15-20 years ago along with the SN who just reported to her first ship, or the person who decided to get out after their first enlistment. I think if you joined this site, and are active on it, then the Navy meant something to you. Loved it or hated it, it meant something, and we can reconnect with whatever it was. There are times when I actually feel like I'm still in uniform. And when people PM me for advice, even though I'm retired and I never met them, well damn, what is that in my eye?

For those military branches that block this site because they see it as a threat, I think they need to do a little more research. I don't think you'll find a more closely guarded group in the public domain."

After being contacted by TWS's Senior Military Advisor, the officer, in question, realized his error and attempted an immediate clarification of his presentation to his distribution list, but to no avail - the damage was done. This PowerPoint had already started to make its rounds, and the Air Force began to systematically block access to the Airforce.Togetherweserved.com's website from most of its bases and installations. Unit commanders, fueled with the Powerpoint mis-information forwarded by their PAO offices and OPSEC managers, commenced issuing notices to their Airmen, demanding that they avoid joining AirForce.Togetherweserved.com at all costs and any that had already joined to clear out their profiles immediately.

The following, one of several different examples forwarded to AFTWS, was distributed by the commander of a USAF Medical Operations Squadron:

"The attached slide show and the message string below highlight a significant Operations Security (OPSEC) threat that has recently surfaced on the Web. This "Together We Served" website has no DoD affiliation and is, in fact, based in Canada, with the parent company in Germany......"

Even their own criminal investigative agency, AFOSI, also bought into the faulty gouge. This lead to a video news package being produced by an AFN outlet in Incirlik, Turkey, which was then installed on every official USAF command website urging airmen to avoid joining the Air Force "My Space" owned by a "German company operating out of Nova Scotia!" It took several days and many phone calls to get this video removed from these websites.

In spite of all attempts to undermine the site, AirForce.Togetherweserved.com is alive and well and Members have shown their full support of the site with less than 1% of Members canceling their accounts or clearing their profiles. But, I'm deeply troubled and saddened. You guys went through the very same public affairs school as I did and fully understand the dangers of widespread dissemination of mis-information of any kind.

Professional military personnel should know better than to blindly accept and forward information to other military members.

TWS is here to stay and will continue to provide honest service to your our users with absolute transparency of our operations. We are an organization that exsits for the sole purpose of helping military members to get and stay connected. I will close with a reminder of the Marines.TWS Mission Statement from our Home Page:

Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful. It's more than a motto. It's a way of life. TogetherWeServed.com is a unique, feature-rich resource helping Marines stay faithful to the Brotherhood of the Corps. This is a place where Marines can re-connect with lost Brothers, share memories and tell their Marine story.

Semper Fi Marines.

Buddies Found - TWS Success Stories!

Can you find Marines on TWS?

More Success Stories this month

"Within minutes of establishing a missing Marine profile for my old friend Salvador Trujillio, my TWS Bro George Reilly sent me leads that resulted in a phone call within 30 minutes that reconnected with Sal. He is doing well. We are now exchanging pics and memories via emails. THANK YOU GEORGE AND TWS!"

"I have been trying to find my best friend from Viet Nam for years. I posted an unlocated profile for him this morning. Got a message form Cpl George Reilly this evening giving me his address and phone no. I called the no. and , sure enough it was my old friend ! Trouble was, we both had too many questions to make any sense. Thanks George !! I'm in your debt."

"I will continue to spread the word... because of your site I have been put in contact with 4 old enlisted buddies that I have not heard from in over 20 years... Thanks!"

"...I had set up my profile then found where I could do one for my dad. After I put his info in, I saw two people on here that was in his platoon. Knowing the story from my uncle how I was named after someone that my dad was in boot with, I sent a message to him, as he was listed. Low and behold, it was him! I had tried a few years ago to find him, but you know the drill have kids, get married, etc etc and things fly by, and its just not on the front burner. We have been chatting in emails since, and I plan on stopping in to meet him and his wife, when my family and I go to NY this summer. I am looking forward to it. He has actually help me put some closure on my dad, since the last time I saw him I was 36 years ago. Thanks TWS for a very well thought out site. Semper Fi"

Marine Corps History - Marines Guard the Mail - 1921

Violence and robbery brought a new and entirely different role for the Marines as the year 1926 progressed. In Elizabeth, New Jersey, on 14 October 1926, the brutal robbery and killing of a U.S. Mail truck driver forced President Calvin Coolidge to turn to the Marine Corps for assistance in the civilian community. By Presidential Order, 2,500 Marines proceeded on duty to form the Western Mail Guards. The Commandant, anticipating the Presidential Order, on 18 October had directed the Commanding General, Headquarters, Department of the Pacific, located in San Francisco to:
"[O]rganize a force from the 4th Regiment, to be known as the Western Mail Guards, under the command of Brigadier-General Smedley D. Butler."

" " Thanks for the assistance and many more thanks for your efforts to keep Marines in contact with Marines. Even though the other services have their sites now, I doubt they have the same Esprit de Corps that we Marines have. Its great to know that I can talk with any Marine, from any generation, and we automatically share that same bond, regardless of MOS, unit, rank, or time in service! Semper Fidelis, Doug Lutz, MSgt USMC (ret.)"
MSgt Doug Lutz

"Thank you for the invite, Sir. Glad to see these sites that are made for Marines by Marines. Only we know the way the of a Marine and a site to share what we're all about is priceless. I like the idea of showing our MOS. Take care, Cpl Matt Briguglio, 3533 1994-1998. Semper FI"
Cpl Matt Briguglio

"Thank you for the kind words. I just found this site last night and did not hesitate to join. I loved being a Marine and love the fact that I am a Marine veteran. My career was cut short due to a spinal cord condition and it's been the most difficult 4 years of my life. Just knowing that there are other Marines out there to talk to is very comforting. Again, thank you and Semper Fi. Victor Goodman, Sgt. USMC"
Sgt Victor Goodman

"Just wanted to say how much this website has helped me through some of the obstacles I have been facing. Here I have been trying to stay in contact with those I have served with through anyway possible. Turn to find out this is way more helpful talking to someone than on the civilian side of the internet blogs.

Mainly though it has helped the times we struggle with in life since we have done the things we have done and do the things we do or have seen the things we seen. Here I can actually hope those by helping myself at the same time. Sending a message to a brother that served next to me in combat or been through the same injuries I have. Gripe and complain about how Duracell needs to make a longer lasting battery for our hearing aids. Just wanted to thank you Sir for what you have done and being Semper Fidelis to those that need it."
